Probabilistic belief expansion and conditioning
نویسنده
چکیده
The paper discusses probabilistic belief change, in particular the type of change occurring when information is added which is consistent with the old beliefs. In the AGM theory of belief revision this type of belief change is known as an expansion, and is usually considered to be easy compared to revision and contraction, the two other main types of belief changes the AGM theory distinguishes. If logical theories are used to represent the belief states, then an explicit deenition of expansion can be given, and, at rst sight, probabilistic conditioning seems a natural generalization of this notion in the context of probabilistic belief states. However, we argue that it may be more correct to view conditioning and expansion as two diierent kinds of belief change, and we discuss the diierences between the two kinds in the context of belief states represented by partially determined probability functions.

Probabilistic Belief Change: Expansion, Conditioning and Constraining
The AGM theory of belief revision has be come an important paradigm for investigat ing rational belief changes. Unfortunately, researchers working in this paradigm have re stricted much of their attention to rather sim ple representations of belief states, namely logically closed sets of propositional sen tences. In our opinion, this has resulted in a too abstract categorisation of belief ...
متن کاملPhD Dissertation: Propositional Reasoning that Tracks Probabilistic Reasoning
Bayesians model one’s doxastic state by subjective probabilities. But in traditional epistemology, in logic-based artificial intelligence, and in everyday life, one’s doxastic state is usually expressed in a qualitative, binary way: either one accepts (believes) a proposition or one does not. What is the relationship between qualitative and probabilistic belief? I show that, besides the familia...
متن کاملAdjustable throat-area expansion valves used in automotive air conditioning systems: A mini review
Adjustable throat-area expansion valves (ATAEV) are functioned as area regulator control units. In literatures, there are many expansion valves normally used in automotive air-conditioning systems, as regulator and electrical type valves. Nevertheless, a review study for such issue has not been introduced, according to the best of author knowledge. The present paper presents a review study for ...
متن کاملPropositional Reasoning that Tracks Probabilistic Reasoning
This paper concerns the extent to which uncertain propositional reasoning can track probabilistic reasoning, and addresses kinematic problems that extend the familiar Lottery paradox. An acceptance rule assigns to each Bayesian credal state p a propositional belief revision method Bp, which specifies an initial belief state Bp(⊤), that is revised to the new propositional belief state B(E) upon ...
متن کاملImagining Probabilistic Belief Change as Imaging (Technical Report)
Imaging is a form of probabilistic belief change which could be employed for both revision and update. In this paper, we propose a new framework for probabilistic belief change based on imaging, called Expected Distance Imaging (EDI). EDI is sufficiently general to define Bayesian conditioning and other forms of imaging previously defined in the literature. We argue that, and investigate how, E...
